Even if you're not the meditation type, you still might find the idea of clearing the mind and tuning out external chaos appealing. Setting the intention to invite stillness and peace into your daily life--if only for five minutes--can be just the nudge you needed to steer you toward toward the calm and serenity you seek. So, where do you start? One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get the ball rolling is to create a home altar. You don’t need a dedicated room or even an entire corner to create this sacred space; a simple side table or nightstand will do. (You can also take this project outside to the garden, if you're lucky enough to have one.) Begin with a beautiful object--a vase of wildflowers, or a favorite piece of art--and let inspiration carry you. Add special talismans, candles, or other items that evoke feelings of serenity, and arrange them in a way that makes you feel good when you look at them. Incorporating the four elements–earth, air, fire, and water—brings harmony to the tableau, and offers a visual reminder of our connection to the natural world.
